Type Locality and Naming

Eastern Qinghai-SE Gansu border region. The Huangzhong Gr was named by Qinghai Province. Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources in 1991. The type locality is at Moshigou and Qingshipo in Huangzhong County, Qinghai Province.

Synonym: (湟中群)


Lithology and Thickness

The Huangzhong Gr is dominated by quartzite, quartz sandstone, siltstone, slate and phyllite. It is subdivided in ascending order into the Moshigou Fm and the Qingshipo Fm – see those formations for details. The total thickness is recorded to 1000 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The base is in unconformable contact with underlying Huangyuan Gr of the Paleoproterozoic.

Upper contact

Disconformably overlain by the Kesur Fm (lower formation of the Huashishan Gr)

Regional extent

Eastern Qinghai-SE Gansu border region. The Huangzhong Gr is distributed mainly along Chalahe River, Gangcha County, at Niangniang Mountain, Datong County, Laji Mountain, Huangzhong County, Gantan of Huzhu County, and Beishan Mountain, of Ledu County.
